MISC:Yes, there really is a Timbuktu, it's in Mali. Formerly French
Sudan, Mali became independent 20 June, 1960. Only 6 1/2% of the
population have access to potable drinking water. It is a landlocked
country. The climate is subtropical to arid; hot and dry from February
to June; rainy, humid, and mild from June to November; cool and dry
from November to February. The terrain is mostly flat to rolling
northern plains covered by sand; savanna in south, rugged hills in the
northeast. 2% of the land is arable. Recent droughts are affecting
marginal agriculture. 80% of the work force is engaged in agriculture.
In 1985 Mali spent nearly 22% of its central government budget on its
military. Member of UN since 1960.
